What makes a good leader
"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." - Mwai Kibaki
When I think of a great leader many names come to mind. Whether being a famous activist, presidential candidate, or CEO, being a leader comes with it's highs and lows, and many have an opinion on what makes a great leader. Of course I have to add my two cents to this argument, and give my take on what qualifies a great leader. So today let's chat about how you can be a great leader in your own life whether at home, in the community, or in your work place. Let's dive in!
1. A good leader gives clear direction to their following
The sign of a good leader in my opinion is someone who is able to share clear direction to those who follow them. This can include giving detailed and clear directions regarding expectations at work, mapping out defined goals for the next several months or year, and giving a line of communication for other questions. A leader that is clear is easy to follow and also gives you the desire to follow their lead. Many people feel at ease when they give direction and look to them for guidance through out their decision making process.
2. A good leader teaches and then let's go
As a parent this is something I have learned to better parent my children when they were growing up. Many parents will tell you how difficult it can be to allow their children to do things in the home, because most times they just don't seem to do it to their standard. However, this is a great teachable moment. Any good leader knows that their students or following need to be taught and then let loose. This means teaching them a task and giving them the responsibility to do it. Sure it might not be perfect, but that's when CONSTRUCTIVE criticism can take place. (Also another good teachable moment) In doing this a great leader knows that you can't simply criticize the work, but giving tips and tricks to make it better is much more appreciated.
3. A good leader has passion for what they do
One of the most important signs of a good leader is that they have a passion for the work they are doing. It is so easy to see right through someone that has no desire to be at work or deal with their employees. No one wants to follow them, no one is confident in their capabilities, and no one trust their judgement. When passion is lacking it is simply more difficult to lead. Who would follow a lack luster leader? It is imperative that as a leader you believe in the cause. Even if it's just gathering your "troops" at home to clean the house. Get passionate about cleaning your house!! LOL ! Think of ways to make things enjoyable, and for the greater good. (Even if the goal is just getting your home spotless)
4. A good leader is humble
Isn't it great when you meet your supervisor or CEO and realize they are laid back and humble? It's the best feeling right? You want to get to know them, have a beer with them, and basically do a great job at your job, because who doesn't want to serve someone that is humble? Humility is an essential when it comes to being a great leader. You want someone that is able to take criticism well, invest in their people and their company, and has a meek heart. Humble people simply are o.k. with letting others be recognized and are grateful and honored to be in the position they are in.
5. A good leader has vision
Any great leader is typically a dreamer. They have a dream and vision that is great and beyond the place that they find themselves at currently. They are constantly looking toward the future and planning ahead. A good leader also inspires others with their vision and encourages them to be apart of something bigger than themselves. Leaders that supply a vision with direction and guidance are even better. This gifting is amazing to see, and many aren't able to step into this part of being a leader due to vision not being apart of their identity.
So what do you think makes a good leader? Do our ideas overlap, or do you have some other ideas? Do you find yourself as a good leader or are their things you could improve on? I'd love to hear your opinions. Leave a comment below! Until next time, have a wonderful rest of your week!
