How to stay the best employee at your job!

Last week we talked about Nailing The Interview and now it's time to talk about how to be the best worker in your company. Often time after being somewhere for a time we lose the novelty of the new job. To-do list might not get finished like they used to, and you might find yourself schlepping to work now. It's hard to have a fresh outlook on a job after a few months, trust me. You're human so we all do it. Letting our work drive go from being 100% to 50%.

So this week I wanted to give you some tips on how to be the best at your job, and possibly score a promotion. I want to give you easy ideas on how you can do your job more effectively - and more timely. So let's jump right in.

1. Begin a solid evening routine

The first step to having a great life and being a great employee is having a great evening routine. This means you are intentional about what you do in the evening to prepare you for the next day. My daughter is a great example of doing this. Each night she prepares her breakfast and gets ready for her next work day. She is diligent with preparing early, not only to stay ahead on her weight loss goal, but to also be alert and ready for work. I would also suggest setting a time for bed. Try your best to make this time non-negotiable. Thirty minutes before going to bed do a sleep meditation, or read a novel. This will help your body know it's time to go to sleep. Avoid using phones, kindles, or laptops to really get your body in sleep mode.

2. Wake up 30 minutes early

I know you're thinking... "Patrice I wake up early enough for this position!", but it's easy to start hitting the snooze button after you've gotten comfortable in a position. Instead, try getting up 30 minutes earlier to improve your morning. This will give you extra time to prepare for work, be less groggy, and to be more efficient with your day. With the extra time you can meditate, journal, pray, or prepare your to do list for the day. The signs of a good worker starts with their morning habits. Many great leaders wake up at 5 a.m. to start their day. They are ready and alert for the day that comes, and are much more efficient through out the day.

3. Arrive Early

When I was working in Human Resources I was a stickler for being on time. To me, being on time is being early. This helped me settle in for the day, and get everything I needed before the clock actually started. The signs of a good employee is someone who values company time. Not only is this great for your work day, but it shows your boss that you are ready to work and a value to their team.

4. Continue your education

The best advice I've ever received was to never stop learning. I think this is great advice when it comes to work. It is essential to be up to date and on trend in whatever field you work in. Whether you are a real estate agent, lawyer, teacher etc. Making yourself invaluable is a sure fire way to keeping your position, and possibly getting a promotion. There are many tools and articles available in every field to keep you constantly learning. Maybe you want to go the extra mile and take a few courses to deepen your learning. Some companies are willing to pay for certification or continued learning. So, when thinking of this be sure to contact your supervisor to see if they are willing to pay for your courses. Not only will this save you money, but it lets your supervisors know you are willing to grow and learn. This is a GREAT thing, especially when they want to promote someone. You'll be at the top of their list.

5. Contribute and offer a helping hand

This one is easy! Just be a great worker, period. When the company is in need of employees to stay late, or help on something after hours, volunteer. It's simple as that. You get noticed when you're putting effort in. Supervisors love employees who are willing to put the extra time in to get the work done. Do your best to always be available. Not to the point that it conflicts with your entire life, but it's always a good look to be the one who is willing to help.

These 5 tips should come in handy when you're finding yourself losing interest in your position. I know it's difficult to stay sharp when you're in a position for too long, but do your best to follow these steps. I assure you someone will soon take notice and it could lead to greater things. Remember to stay focused, stay sharp, and ready to learn. Until next week, have a good one!
